It depends on the job. A clean, dry cloth can lift light dust. A lightly dampened cloth can help with everyday marks on suitable surfaces. Avoid soaking delicate surfaces, and follow the product and surface care instructions. For drying, start with a clean towel that can take up the remaining water.

For light dust and everyday marks, water may be enough. Grease, stubborn residue and tasks that require disinfection may need a suitable cleaning product. Check that it is compatible with both the cloth and the surface, and follow its instructions. Do not assume that wiping with water disinfects a surface.

Follow the device manufacturer's instructions first. Switch the device off and disconnect it from power where instructed. Start with a clean screen cloth and a light touch. If the manufacturer allows water, lightly dampen the cloth rather than spraying the screen, and keep moisture away from openings. Some specialist screen finishes require a specific cleaning cloth or method.

Keep a separate cloth for screens. A cloth used in the kitchen may carry grease, cleaning-product residue or particles that you do not want on a display. Choose the screen cloth and follow the device manufacturer's guidance.

Wash and rinse the vehicle before drying. Check that the towel is clean and free from grit, then use a light touch on the clean bodywork. Do not use it to rub dirt off a dry car, and keep wheel-cleaning cloths separate from paintwork towels. Follow the vehicle or coating manufacturer's care instructions.

That depends on the towel size, the vehicle and how much water remains after rinsing. You may need to wring out the towel or use another dry one. Choose a size suited to your vehicle rather than assuming that one towel will dry every car in a single pass.

A soft cloth can still carry grit or hardened residue. Check both the cloth and the surface before wiping, use gentle pressure and stop if you feel resistance. If a cloth falls on the ground, clean and inspect it before using it on paintwork, glass or a screen. Always follow any surface-specific restrictions.

A dirty cloth, too much moisture or leftover cleaning product can leave marks behind. Try a fresh cloth, less liquid and a separate clean cloth for the final wipe, where suitable. For displays and coated glass, follow the manufacturer's instructions rather than adding a stronger cleaner.
